People Of Andaman
People Of Andaman
Andaman , is a heavenly paradise on earth, a perfect destination for avid travellers and one of India's places with most diversity. In this blog, I am going to explain to you about all the people of Andaman and their cultures.
As I stayed in Andaman, I got to know lot about its cultural diversity. When I visited Neil Island, I found out that it was predominantly filled with descendants of Hindu Bangladeshis, who had settled in Andaman during the Bangladesh partition. Due to their religious persecution, they seem to be people who worship a lot. I could see that each and every house had its own temple right next to it. Coming from an urban area, I was surprised that Bangalore, despite being much larger, has only as many temples as Neil Island. When I asked around to find more information, I found out that most of the people in Neil Island were related to each other and the government had given each family 10 acres of land in Neil Island when they came from Bangladesh.
When I was on the way to Baratang, I had stopped for an early breakfast near the check post. There were a couple of temples there and they were styled exactly like all the Tamil temples in my native cities, Madurai and Chennai. I had seen many Tamilians and realized many of them were settled here. When I reached Baratang, I saw that most of the people were from Jharkand. They had come to lay roads during the British period and had permanently settled there. As for Port Blair and Havelock, It was filled with a mix of people from every state mainly , Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, etc. The vegetables and fruits in Andaman come from the mainland, mainly Chennai and a bit from Kolkata so the vegetables were expensive. Some vegetables and fruits grow there but not on a large scale. Mainly, cold climate growing fruits and vegetables like carrot and cauliflower, etc. are imported from the mainland. The most shocking thing was that Andaman doesn't have it's own food , culture, dance or language. It is a mix of all Indian states and is like a mini-version of India in itself.
Except the Settlements, Tribes who are the real natives are settled all over Andaman which includes:
1)The Jarawa
2)The Sentinalese
3)The Great Andamanese
4)The Shompen
5)The Onge
