Holes Book Review-by Louis Sachar

 Book: Holes

Author: Louis Sachar

Summary: Stanley Yelnats was at the wrong place and at the wrong time. He had been arrested for stealing the shoes of a baseball player who was going to sell it and donate the money to charity. He hadn't exactly stolen them, they had fallen on him when he was walking on the road. The shoes looked old and Stanley decided to take it home as his father was working on a project to recycle old shoes. At the court he was given the option to go to juvenile or Camp Green Lake. He and his parents choose Camp Green Lake as it sounded like a summer camp. But when Stanley reaches Camp Green Lake, he sees no Green or Lake. He finds out it is a reeducation camp where child criminals are forced to dig holes exactly 5 feet in width and 5 feet in height. They are given less water, food and just a four minute shower. He makes friends with Zero, X-Ray, Armpit, Squid, Magnet and Zigzag who have named themselves that even though it is not their real names. But what are they actually digging for? Read the book to find out.

My Opinion: The book was extremely fascinating. The author had conveyed the harshness of the environment in Camp Green Lake very well and I could picture it and feel it around me. The book was a page turner and the story was very intense. The campers' willpower and mental strength to survive 180 days and dig holes in camp green lake was conveyed very well. My favorite character was Zero(Hector Zeroni) as everyone thought he was dumb, useless and couldn't do anything properly but he didn't care. Everyday he dug his holes and was very helpful to others. He also had the mental willpower to learn things even if nobody thought he could learn them was very strong. He had also learnt the alphabets from Stanley. At first he didn't get them but later after lots of hard work he learnt them. He was also physically strong and had ran 10 miles to run away from camp green lake without water or food. My favorite part of the book was in the end when everybody in Stanley and Hector's family were watching the super bowl game and the ad featuring Stanley and Hector came live on TV.I never thought this would happen and was flabbergasted by the surprise scene as even Clyde Livingston came in the advertisement. I lived, laughed and loved this astonishingly amazing piece of literature.
