New Regulations Imposed By The FIA That You Need To Know Before F1 2026
The most visible change that those of you who watch Formula 1 would notice is that the cars are narrower, shorter and also have smaller wheels losing an overall of 30 kgs making the car lighter and faster. This would have multiple influences including more fuel efficiency, lesser breaking.
The next change is that DRS or the Drag Reduction System will be replaced by movable front and rear wings called Active Aero so Drivers will be able to switch from the Standard Z Mode to the X mode straights to increase their top speed.Easier overtaking opportunities will open because cars can reduce drag more effectively leading to more intense racing.Unlike DRS zones, movable wings can be used more flexibly without a one second range or designated DRS zones , making overtakes harder to anticipate.
The 2026 power units will run on sustainable fuel, Biofuel or Electric. The current power unit gets 80% of its power from the Internal Combustion Engine or ICE and 20% from the Electric Unit but now the production of power will be 50% from each.Electric motors deliver immediate acceleration, improving responsiveness out of corners.Running on biofuel or electricity drastically reduces carbon emissions. Next year the battery will have 3 modes Recharge mode, Boost Mode and Overtake Mode. Recharge Mode is used to charge the battery as the name obviously suggests. Boost Mode can be used in straights to go faster but Overtake Mode will give extra speed making overtakes easier. Overtake Mode will take inspiration from DRS and can be used within a one second range only.
These are the main changes in the 2026 Formula 1 car but let's take a look at the new circuits.
Portimao returns after 2021. It was part of the calender for two years both won by Lewis Hamilton.Portimão is a permanent circuit in southern Portugal, famous for its rollercoaster-like elevation changes.
The Madrid track is a hybrid street circuit around the IFEMA exhibition center and nearby areas. It is neither a permanent or street circuit but a hybrid track having elements of both like the Miami International Autodrome.
